Fireworks explores the artistic responses to fire in a variety of media and a diverse range of styles. The project teases out the psychological impact of fire as a major element in shaping the Australian story. By tracing the interplay between humans and landscape with fire, the exhibition illuminates the character of both.
The vibrant colours of
fire, particularly when set against a dark sky, provide for spectacular
images. Also, the idea of fire as a consuming but renewing force also
drive the artistic imagination.
The exhibition includes works by a diverse group of Australian artists including Sidney Nolan, Eugene von Guerard, Arthur Streeton, Fred Williams, Claudine Marzik, Ronnie Tjumpitjinpa, John Firth Smith and Wendy Sharpe. The works on display reflect experiences in the bush, the suburbs and the cities.
